Hike on the newly built off-road trail on the Miami Erie Canal Towpath and hear interesting presentations on the Miami and Erie Canal and Black Swamp.
|
Dates are April 25-27 (Friday Evening to Sunday after Breakfast). All events and meals except Sunday breakfast will be held at the Church of the Nazarene in Napoleon. Since we need to be out of the church building and parking lot on Sunday morning we will have breakfast at the lodge at Mary Thurston State Park. | |
Registration will start on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the church. Supper will be on your own either on the way or possibly at a local restaurant in Napoleon. Suggestions with directions will be provided when you register.
The program on Friday night will begin at 7:15 p.m. Stephanie Jaqua will give a presentation on the canal history of the Miami Erie Canal in Northwest Ohio. We will be in for a real treat as Stephanie has worked as a living history interpreter in costume on the canal boat in nearby Grand Rapids. The evening will conclude with snacks and fellowship.
Saturday will kick off at 8:00 am with breakfast. The BTA annual business meeting is at 10:00 a.m., followed by lunch.
During the afternoon choose from several activities:
- There will be various opportunities for hikes of different lengths to experience the newly built off-road sections on the Miami Erie Canal Towpath.
- Clark Hogan will lead a bicycle ride on the new trail. Bring your bike and join Clark and others on a 5 mile ride along the scenic Maumee River.
- Another possibility for the afternoon is going to West Unity, OH to a glassblower’s shop for a demonstration.
The ever-popular silent auction will start on Friday and end before the Saturday evening program with the results being given out before the awards. This is a great way to get gear and miscellany.
Dinner on Saturday evening will be catered. The evening program will feature a presentation on the Black Swamp by Pete Wilhem who is an expert on this swamp which once covered a vast area in Northwest Ohio. Awards will given out after the program followed by snacks and social time.
Camping will be available on the grounds of the Nazarene Church for campers (no electric or water hook-ups) and tents. Another option is for people to sleep on the floor in their sleeping bags in the smaller rooms in the church. Other accommodations are listed at the end of the article.
The cost for the full weekend from Friday night through Sunday morning is $40.00 which includes all meals on Saturday, breakfast on Sunday, programs, activities, snacks, and a donation to the church for using their facilities.
For Saturday only the cost is $25.00 which includes lunch, supper, snacks, activities, programs, and a donation to the church for using their facilities.
