Miami-Erie Canal Towpath between Defiance, Napoleon, and Grand Rapids!

safety talk
Safety talk before starting work.

A great big thank you to all who turned out to assist the Buckeye Trail Association's (BTA) Trail Crew to work at this special Work Party to clear trail from Napoleon towards Grand Rapids. Many local people from the area, including boys scouts and high school students, contributed days of work along with the trail building crews.

We thank the many local business and citizens who were "trail angels" by donating food, equipment, fuel for the equipment, and a place to camp. Specifically:

~ Clark Hogan of Hawks Pizza and Drive-Thru who provided delicious dinners on four different evenings.

~ Linda Krauskopf and Lu Ann Limbird who provided a delicious homemade dinner on Monday evening.

~ Dr. Bill and Angie Lorenz who prepared a delicious breakfast on Wednesday morning.

~ Ken Woods for providing a bulldozer and skidder.

~ Steve Lankenau of American Ag Fuels for providing the fuel for the equipment.

~ Mary Jane Thurston State Park staff for the camping facilities, the use of the Day Lodge, and the naturalist program on woodcocks.

The project is to move 60 miles of on-road trail to off-road trail along the old abandoned Miami-Erie Canal towpath between Defiance, Napoleon, Grand Rapids and beyond and to develop it into a hiking and bicycling trail. The North Country Trail is concurrent with the Buckeye Trail along this portion of the route. This work project will eliminate a dangerous road walk and add to the historical interest of the trail. This is a wonderful opportunity for the BTA and the North Country Trail to revitalize this part of the old abandoned Miami-Erie Canal towpath.

The following are pictures taken from the 6 days spent working on the trail.
