SR-212 ( Poplar St.) at Park St
BT leaves SR-212 and continues E on Poplar St. In one block, BT turns S on Canal St. past several antique shops, bars, PO: 44612 and restaurants. The Ohio & Erie Canal lay just to the E of and parallel to Central St. In two blocks at Water St., look E across both I-77 and the Tuscarawas R. to see remnant foundation of aqueduct that carried Sandy & Beaver Canal over river to junction with Ohio & Erie Canal directly in front of you.
At the end of Canal St. (just N of DQ), BT turns W on Walnut St. In 1 block, BT turns S onto Park St. (SR‑212). In 1 block at stoplight, BT continues S on Park St. as SR-212 turns E.
The Lebold Homestead Springhouse Bed & Breakfast is located at 10903 SR-212 NE nearby. Contact bnb@wilkshire.net, www.springhouse.com, 330‑874‑4255, 800-796-9100. ) It can be reached in 1.2 mile via SR-212 near N Lebold Square.
In 1900’, BT reaches the entrance to Fort Laurens State Memorial which is owned and managed by Ohio Historical Society. This site marks the only Revolutionary War Battle fought in Ohio. Park and Museum are open in Summer w/ P, Pr, PS, PT, W.
Continue past Ft. Laurens main entrance to the equestrian trail adjacent to the RR tracks. Turn E. and follow the trail over the bridge over I-77 to the canal towpath trail.
At the S end of the bridge, trail joins former towpath that meanders generally SE high above Tuscarawas R. on a segment that shows an interesting array of artifacts. The trail passes a gate valve that would have been used to drain the canal when work was needed downstream. BT passes remains of rebuilt Lock 7, Lock 8, a culvert that conducts a sizeable stream beneath the canal, Lock 9, and finally, Lock 10. Just below Lock 10 is a complex series of structures that include a concrete arch and an abandoned railroad overpass. Just E of the arch is an isolated stone structure. The arch was the bridge that carried the towpath over the feeder that watered the canal from a dam in the Tuscarawas R. Adventurous hikers can follow the old rail grade E to a good view of the remains of the dam and the artificial rapids they create. S of the rail grade lie remains of a fish hatchery built in the prism of the canal after the canal ceased operation. A large number of structures including two concrete pillars are associated with this development. |

Steps to Foot Bridge to Zoar Village
This former county road bridge has been restored, etc. |
- (10/24/07) Ongoing development of the Ohio Erie Canalway project has reduced the length of an onerous road walk in the Massillon Section. This Alert affects the trail between Pts. 25 and 27. Update your 2004 Massillon Map as below.
The trail no longer uses Pt. 26. Delete. The current text at Pt. 25 is given below. The changes on the ground affect only the CW distance at Pt. 27. For all points north of Pt. 25, reduce the CCW distance by 0.8 miles. For all points south of Pt. 27, reduce the CW distance by 0.8 miles. The length of this section is now 53.6 miles overall.
The topographic segment shows important detail. The blue line shows the trail as shown on the 2004 Edition. That portion of the trail no longer used is marked by X’s. Points are shown as black concentric circles. The red line shows the new route of the BT, most of which is off-road.

Driveway at SR-800
BT turns NE on SR-800 and crosses Tuscarawas
R. on bridge. In 2000' opposite intersection of SR-800 and SR-212, BT turns SE onto APT and continues towards a beautiful iron truss bridge over Conotton Creek. Restored in 2007 under the leadership of Camp Tuscazoar Foundation, this bridge is an excellent example of a Fink through truss bridge. In 500' past bridge, BT joins maintained Old Zoarville Rd. and continues SE. In 310' as Old Zoarville Rd. ends, BT joins Boy Scout Rd. heading SW.

The Massillon Section begins in Hartville where the Mogadore Section ends. The north end of the trail follows suburban roads past Nimisilla Reservoir, a unit of Portage Lakes State Park. In Crystal Springs, the trail connects to the south end of the Akron Section on towpath. This junction closes the 'Little Loop' of the Buckeye Trail. The little loop comprises the Akron, Bedford, Burton, Mogadore and Massillon Sections. The Massillon Section continues along the Towpath Trail, a unit of Stark Parks. Former towpath is followed through the remainder of Stark County and much of Tuscarawas County. The trail visits the towns of Massillon, Navarre and Bolivar. South of Zoarville, the Buckeye Trail again follows country roads past Camp Tuscazoar into the Bowerston section. (39% off-road trail)
