Trail Alert

  • (6/13/11)
This Alert has been issued because the bridge that conducts both Beasley Fork Road and the Buckeye Trail across the Ohio Brush Fork Creek just west of Point 7 as described on the West Union section Map Edition of February 2010, has been closed for repair. The bridge repair may last up to two years.
The suggested bypass continues north to SR 125 in order to cross the Ohio Brush Creek and then returns on country roads to rejoin the existing route where Steep Hill Road joins Beasley Fork Road. Although the bypass ends before reaching Point 8, the description of the bypass is continued between Points 7 and 8 for the convenience of the user. The bypass is quite long, 7.2 miles. If you are coming from the east, you may wish to take a chance and walk the 880’ to the bridge. If nobody is working and you feel comfortable with the decking that is available, you may wish to use the bridge. The water level may be low enough that you would feel comfortable fording the stream. From the west, both possibilities exist but the distance between Steep Hill Road where the reroute begins/ends and the bridge is 5000’. That distance is far enough that the risk of failure may not support the possible benefit. No suggestion other than the reroute is supported by Buckeye Trail Association, Inc.
Overall, the bypass extends the length of the West Union Section by 6.1 miles.

The suggested bypass (PT) continues N past El. 551' Beaseley Fork Rd on Waggoner Riffle Rd. In 3.1 miles, Waggoner Riffle Rd ends and PT turns NW onto SR 125, after 1500' crossing Ohio Brush Creek.

PT continues NW on SR 125, after 730' leaving SR 125 and joining Satterfield Rd heading SE, after 850' crossing Soldier's Run, descending slowly down the valley of Ohio Brush Creek. In time, the idyllic route changes as PT climbs the western wall of this deeply incised valley. Somewhere along the way, Satterfield becomes Malone Rd.

Here, at a sharp bend, PT leaves Malone Rd to join Steep Hill Rd heading S. NOTE: An unnamed road, shown on the West Union Map, intersects Malone Rd just a little W of the Malone Rd/Steep Hill Rd intersection. Indeed, this road has names at this end as well as at the Beasley Fork Rd end. However, this otherwise attractive route does not connect.

  • (6/12/11)
A small, permanent change in trail routing past the old community of New Hope has been created by West Union Section Supervisor Steve Miller. New Hope has achieved near ghost town status in recent years.
In Miller’s words, “Reason for relocation - High Street from Main St to New Hope-White Oak Station Rd is not only closed, but barricaded to an extent that getting around the barricade is very difficult.” The new route of the Buckeye Trail follows New Hope-White Oak Station Road around New Hope. The change in route does not affect the distance in any significant way.
The Feb 2010 West Union Edition is affected as follows. Most of the description applied in Point 29 related to travel through New Hope. With that material removed, there is no need for Point 30 which is where the route through New Hope returned to New Hope-White Oak Station Road. The new text should read:

This covered bridge is a well-preserved example of laminated bow arch construction, claimed rare. BT continues NW on Hauke Rd. In 1300', BT continues E across US-68 onto New Hope-White Oak Station Rd, after 150’ passing Main St (exits N), after 450’ passing New Hope-McKinley Rd (exits SE). BT continues generally E past Goose Run Rd (6800', exits E), crosses an unnamed stream (960'), crosses Goose Run (1000') and passes Stephan Rd (3300' exits E). In 1200', BT leaves New Hope-White Oak Station Rd and turns NW onto Beckelheimer Rd

 West Union Section map
The Buckeye Trail reaches its most southerly point on the trail in the section, dipping to withing two miles of the Ohio River. The trail primarily follows back roads alongside several small streams. The only town directly on the trail is Bentonville, but a larger city of Manchester lies only two miles off the trail. As the trail continues westward, the hills begin to flatten a bit and more farmland appears. After fording a stream twice, the section ends near Grant Lake.
