Whipple Section trail Alerts:
- (04/08/06) The trail crosses T-414 at Pt. 3. T-414 is not maintained although the road is passable past Pt. 3. The road does not go through to County Road Nine as shown on the map. A small number of cars may be parked at Pt. 3, more if they are high clearance vehicles.
In addition, the trail is closed between Pt. 8 and Pt. 9. A revised route is suggested below.

BT at Brooks Road. (T-94)
Note that the published map shows Pt. 6 at
the intersection of Cow Run Rd. and Brooks Rd. This depiction is misleading. The attached map shows Pt. 6 in its correct location. Note also that the trail between Pt.6 and Pt. 7 is entirely on road.
BT joins Brooks Rd. near a ravine filled with junk. BT then descends and meanders generally S into the valley of Cow Run. In 2660', Brooks Rd. deadends into Cow Run Rd. (T-19) and continues W.
In 3300', Cow Run Rd. reaches Laurel Hlll Rd. (T-302) just before Cow Run Rd. crosses Little Muskingum R. BT joins Laurel Hlll Rd. and meanders W through bottomland amidst farms and homes.
In 2900', Laurel Hill Rd. rounds a wide U-turn and reaches Pt. 7. |

South End of U-Bend on Laurel Hill Rd. T-302)
BT/NCT formerly left Laurel Hlll Rd. here and continued generally W and S along Little Muskingum R. However, at the present time, the trail is closed between Pt. 8 opposite the Lane Farm about 1-½ mile ahead and Pt. 9 at the Hills Covered Bridge. In mid-summer when the Little Muskingum R. is low, the river can be safely forded. Otherwise, it is recommended to continue S to the summit of Mt. Zion, even though the reroute is entirely on road.
BT continues on Laurel Hill Rd. climbing generally E. |

Laurel Hill Rd. (T-302) at Zion Ridge Rd. (C-544)
Note that the map shows Laurel Hlll Rd. continues S across the ridge. While there is some evidence for a road somewhat SW on Zion Ridge Rd., Laurel Hlll Rd. does effectively stop at this intersection.
BT joins Zion Ridge Rd. (C-544) and heads SW. In 5600', Hand Schumacher Rd. (T-44) continues SW along ridge. BT continues on Zion Ridge Rd now W and makes a more serious descent. In 8500’, BT passes Beech Grove Church and Cemetery. |

Zion Ridge Rd. (C-544) at C-333
BT joins C-333 and heads NW across the Little Muskingum R. The Hills Covered Bridge is just up river a short distance. We are told that ownership of the bridge is disputed. Currently, discretion suggests that the bridge be avoided. Pt. 9 is at the east end of the bridge and no longer on the trail.
In 2100', BT reaches SR-26 via C-333. Note that this description avoids Pt. 9 that is not located on C-333. It is at the east end of the Hills Bridge whose use is presently in dispute. BT joins SR-26 and heads NW to Pt. 10. |

End of Trail Alerts
Along with the Road Fork Section, this section provides a link between the off-road trail in AEP Recreation Lands and North Country Trail in the Marietta Unit of Wayne National Forest. Although the ridges remain high and are generally forested, the trail passes through farmland and several remote towns with few facilities. Towns and other features include Hills Covered Bridge, Stanleyville, Whipple, Warner, Macksburg, Crooked Tree and Hackney. This section ends in the Stockport Section near Onion Run. (26% off-road trail)
