About Mentor, Ohio

Mentor is a city in Lake County in northeastern Ohio, located on Lake Erie about 30 minutes east of Cleveland. Mentor was among the first towns settled in the Connecticut Western Reserve, developing slowly as a farming community with artisans and nurserymen. Today, it is known as both a thriving community and a year-round destination for outdoor recreation.

History and Geography

In 1797, Charles Parker, a surveyor with the Connecticut Land Company, built a cabin on the marshland of what was then the Western Reserve Territory. After the Civil War, it became known for its nurseries, greenhouses, and as a summer retreat for Cleveland’s wealthy families, who built grand estates along the Mentor Avenue Corridor. Mentor continued to grow steadily and was incorporated as a city in 1963.

Mentor is an outdoor lover’s delight. With its close proximity to Lake Erie, a trail user can experience outside activities year-round in Mentor. Home to many parks and nature preserves, Mentor boasts miles of trails available for hikers.

Outdoor recreation opportunities

  • Hiking: Mentor has miles of trails available for the trail user.
  • Cycling: Mentor is a bike-friendly community with both bike trails and bike lanes.
  • Kayaking/Canoeing: Rentals are available at Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina.
  • Birding: Mentor Marsh has been a National Park Service-designated National Natural Landmark since 1966 for being one of the most species-rich sites on the Great Lakes shoreline. It is also a National Audubon Society Important Birding Area.

  • Farmers Market: Held 2–6 pm Fridays June–September at Eleanor B. Garfield Park.
  • Mentor Cruise In: Mentor’s annual car cruise was first held in 2002 and attracts upwards of 800 vehicles and 2,500 spectators each August.
  • Mentor City Fest: Held in August, this two-day, family-friendly festival is packed with activities, games, entertainment, food, and more.
  • Headlands Birding Festival: Held the third weekend of September, the festival celebrates the fall migration of bird species as they travel to their wintering grounds. The Headlands/Mentor Marsh region hosts some of the highest diversity and volume of migratory birds in the state, with 352 species documented in Lake County.
  • Earth Day Celebration: Held each year in April.
  • Mentor Rocks: A free summer series concerts at the Civic Amphitheater.
  • Wildwood Arts & Wine Fest: Held in June.
  • Lake Erie Sand Sculpture Tour: Held at Headlands Beach State Park on the second weekend in July.
