About Peebles, Ohio

The village of Peebles was platted in 1881 at the junction of Zane’s Trace (1796 – 1797) and the Cincinnati and Eastern Railway. Named for Portsmouth businessman John G. Peebles, the town’s first house was built by David Nixon and later operated as the Nixon Hotel. From 1906 to 1917, annual chautauquas were held on grounds just south of the railroad, drawing visitors for lectures, performances, and community gatherings.

History and Geography

Peebles is located in Adams County in Ohio’s Appalachian Foothills, near the Great Serpent Mound, a 1,348-foot-long effigy mound and National Historic Landmark. The surrounding landscape of rolling hills, forests, and farmland has shaped the community’s character, providing both natural beauty and cultural significance.
