About Shawnee, Ohio

Shawnee is a historic town in southern Ohio that rose to prominence during the late 19th-century coal boom. Once a bustling community of thousands known as the entertainment capital of eastern Appalachia for its Tecumseh Theatre, it remains today as one of the best-preserved examples of a coal boomtown in the eastern United States. Evidence of surface mining remains visible in the surrounding hills–reclaimed lands, coal piles, and occasional sinkholes mark the landscape today.

History and Geography

Before European settlement, the Shawnee Tribe used the area’s salt licks and forests as hunting grounds. Coal mining fueled Shawnee’s rapid growth, transforming the town into a thriving center. In addition to mining, the area supported iron foundries and brick furnaces, and Shawnee played a key role in the birth of labor unions. Due to extensive mining, potable water is not available in this portion of the Wayne National Forest.

Why You Should Visit

Shawnee’s Main Street has retained its original Victorian-era character, with historic buildings, overhanging porches, and two opera houses. Visitors can experience one of the most intact examples of boomtown architecture in the eastern United States and explore the area’s deep connections to labor history, coal heritage, and natural reclamation.

Outdoor recreation opportunities

  • Hiking: Adjacent to the Wayne National Forest, there are miles of trails available.
  • Biking: Many challenging hilly country gravel roads available; Shawnee is adjacent to the Dirty Water 500K route, a strenuous gravel bike packing route.
  • Birding: Tecumseh Lake is a birding hot spot.
  • Kayaking/Canoeing: Both are permitted on Tecumseh Lake.
  • Fishing: Fishing is permitted on Tecumseh Lake and the Mine Fire Interpretive area.

Places to visit

Events

  • Farmers Market: Held outside on the first Friday of the month, May through October; held inside January through April.
  • Blue Blaze Festival: The Buckeye Trail Association holds an annual event in Shawnee every September to celebrate the trails. There is a hike, half marathon, 10K run, and a backpacking event for all skill levels.
  • Second Saturdays: Held on the second Saturday of each month from May to September. From 7-9 pm, local residents and visitors alike gather on Shawnee’s Main Street for music, food trucks, and community spirit.
  • Other events: Visit the Destination Shawnee Facebook page to see what else is going on.
  • Try-It Day at Tecumseh Lake: Held each August, this free family event invites everyone to try canoeing, kayaking, and fishing—no experience needed. With local partners and volunteers, we provide equipment, instruction, and lunch for a fun day on the water.

  • Vacation rentals: Smiley’s Campground offers a few cabin rentals. Three Airbnb properties are available in Shawnee.
