About Spencerville, Ohio
Spencerville is a small, rural, agricultural community of about 2,200 residents in northwest Ohio, west of Lima. The village was established due to its location along the Miami and Erie Canal, which shaped its early growth and identity. Spencerville preserves the historic character of the Miami and Erie Canal towpath, making it an appealing stop for trail users.
History and Geography
The village was named in 1848 after Col. Spencer, a member of the State Board of Public Works and a strong advocate for canal construction. In the 1800s, surrounding forests supported local lumber mills and stave factories. Transportation links expanded when the narrow-gauge railroad reached Spencerville in 1878, followed by the Chicago and Atlantic Railroad four years later, connecting the village to markets east and west.

Located ten miles between the Trail Towns of St. Marys and Delphos, it’s an ideal day-hike destination for section hikers. With ample parking and access to outdoor activities like hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, bird watching, and family walks, Spencerville offers a perfect base for recreation.

- Hiking: The flat terrain of western Ohio can help a new hiker build mileage and a seasoned hiker cover more miles in a day.
- Biking: Lightly trafficked country roads make for a great biking experience.
