About Troy, Ohio
Troy, founded in 1808 and named after the legendary ancient city, is located along the Great Miami River in western Ohio. Troy’s strategic location on the river and near key turnpikes supported early growth, and aviation became central to Troy’s identity when the Weaver Aircraft Company was established in 1919, becoming the largest manufacturer of civil aircraft in the 1920s and 1930s.
History and Geography
The city’s early settlement grew around the Overfield Tavern, which also served as its first courthouse, further accelerated by the arrival of the Miami and Erie Canal in 1837 and later the railroad. Remnants of canal locks can still be seen along the city’s northern edge. The city also developed a strong industrial base in the early 20th century, with Hobart Manufacturing and Hobart Brothers emerging as global leaders in food equipment and welding technology.

A community focal point is the Beaux Arts-style Miami County Courthouse, designed by Columbus architect J.W. Yost and completed in 1888.

- Eldean Covered Bridge: This covered bridge is one of only two covered bridges remaining in the county. The bridge, built in 1860, is still the longest “Long Truss” covered bridge in the nation. This bridge was given National Historic Landmark designation in 2017.
- The Overfield Tavern Museum: Located in Troy’s first permanent structure, a tavern built in 1807, the museum houses several early 19th-century items.

- Biking: The Buckeye Trail travels exclusively on the Great Miami Recreational Trail as it passes through Troy. The route winds its way near museums, a charming and historic downtown, picnic facilities, and acres of parkland.
- Kayaking/Canoeing: River access is available at the Twin Arch Reserve on the Great Miami River.

- Trail Conditions Map: The City of Troy has created a high-water bypass route through their beautiful historic downtown for use when high water inundates sections of the Great Miami River Trail, which are inside the flood levees.

Public camping areas:
- The Miami County Fairgrounds north of Troy offers camping in Troy. Call 937.335.7492 or email office@mcasinc.com for details.
- Eastwood, Island, and Taylorsville MetroParks offer primitive campsites open to the public operated by Dayton MetroParks. Hikers and backpackers can register for these first come, first served campsites, open year-round with a small fee.
- Float Troy: Sleep out on the water as part of this unique camping opportunity on the Maumee River. Inflatable, floating raft tent rentals are available through Troy Recreation Department. Call 937.339.5145 for first come, first served reservations.
