About Yellow Springs, Ohio
Yellow Springs takes its name from the village’s natural mineral springs, long believed to have healing properties. Known for its eclectic character, the community combines small-town charm with a tradition of diversity, creativity, and progressive values. In the 1860s, Wheeling Gaunt, a formerly enslaved man who became a prominent landowner, left a legacy that continues today through the tradition of giving flour and sugar to widows each Christmas. This story, along with the village’s deep history of resilience and inclusion, remains central to Yellow Springs’ identity.
History and Geography
As early as 1805, the springs drew visitors for their “medicinal benefits,” fueling the town’s growth as a health resort. In 1827 Elisha Mills purchased the land. Mills brought the railroad through Yellow Springs and offered land and funding to establish Antioch College in 1852, one of the first U.S. colleges to admit African Americans on equal terms. The Little Miami Railroad further spurred commerce and tourism, and Yellow Springs was officially incorporated in 1856.
