Burton Trail Alert
Pt 8: Girdled Rd at North Entrance to LMP Girdled Road Reservation
Pt 9: Three-Way Trail Junction
Pt 10: BT at Concord-Hambden Rd (SR 608) - Skok Meadow parking area
Pt 11: Robinson Rd at Pearl Rd
Lake Metroparks announced the removal of the suspension bridge over Big Creek in the Girdled Road Reservation. The bridge is at Pt 9: Three-Way Trail Junction in the middle of the reservation. The bridge had deteriorated and was removed for safety reasons. The plan is for a new bridge to be installed next year.
This affects the trail from Pt 8 to Pt 11 in the Burton Section. Depending on the hiking direction, hikers will bypass either Pt 8, Pt 9: or Pt 10.
There is no detour for CW hikers. The BT is closed CW from Pt. 8 to Pt 10 which includes the entirety of the Girdled Road Reservation and Skok Meadow. CW hikers will need to drive or shuttle from Pt 8 to Pt 10. At Pt 10, continue with the directions in your BTA mapping product. Plan your hike accordingly. Both Pt 8 and 10 have parking areas.
The BTA is recommending that hikers travel this section of the trail in the CCW direction only. The detour going CCW passes through the Girdled Road Reservation using a different route that misses the bridge and does not pass through Skok Meadow.
The detour for CCW hikers is as follows:
From Pt 11, continue with the information in your BTA mapping product until you reach the northern end of Winchell Rd at Concord-Hambden Rd (SR 608). Here you will cross SR 608 and turn right to follow a very narrow berm facing traffic 0.3 mi downhill.
Warning: SR 608 is a busy road with narrow berms. Wear reflective gear and avoid hiking during the morning and evening rush hours.
Turn left into the Girdled Road Reservation campsite parking area and follow the Big Creek Valley Trail as it winds along the edge of Big Creek. At the junction with the Oak Leaf Trail, continue N to reach Pt 9 at the location of the removed bridge. From this point continue on the BT to Pt 8. This option bypasses the trail from a small portion of the end of Pt 11 to Pt 10, and all of Pt 10 to Pt 9.
Alternately, for CCW hikers, you may wish to avoid hiking downhill on SR 608 from Winchell Rd for safety reasons. In this case, you would turn left along SR 608 to reach Pt 10, near the entrance to Skok Meadow overflow parking area. This option bypasses the trail from Pt 10 to Pt 8. CCW hikers will need to drive or shuttle from Pt 10 to Pt 8. Both have parking areas. At Pt 8, continue with the directions in your BTA mapping product. Plan your hike accordingly.
This alert applies to all BTA mapping products.
