This Map Update addresses several issues in the South Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks – moving trail off of All Purpose Trail (APT) to single track trail, eliminating unsustainable trail, and avoiding a dangerous stream crossing. In addition, Pt 14 moved from an intersection on Miles Rd at Chagrin River Rd to the parking area at Look About Lodge, also a Cleveland Metropark facility.

The result of this change reduced the distance from Pt 13 to Pt 14 by 0.4 mi and increased the distance from Pt 14 to 15 by 0.3 mi, making the Bedford Section 66.1 mi. To make the mileages correct on the map product you are using, for CW miles, subtract 0.4 mi from the mileage at Pt 14, and subtract 0.1 mi from Pt 15 and higher. For the CCW miles, add 0.3 mi to the mileage at Pt 14 and subtract 0.1 mi from Pt 13 and lower.

The update applies to all BTA mapping products.

The updated Point descriptions are as follows:

Pt. 10. Shadow Lake Picnic Area (P, Pr, PT): CW 16.9 ; CCW 49.3
BT returns to bridle path E on footpath, turns N, crosses Solon Rd (0.6 mi) and Aurora Rd (1.0 mi, SR 43). Continue N, cross to W side of parkway, and further on cross on the bridge over former RR. Soon, BT crosses Cannon Rd (0.3 mi), uses the bridge over US 422 (0.2 mi), continues on the bridle trail to cross Harper Rd (0.3 mi), and continues E.

Pt. 11. Harper Ridge PA (P, Pr, PS, PT): CW 20.1 ; CCW 46.1

You are here: 41.41457 N, 81.45926 W. The drive into Harper Ridge PA (no W) is just across Hawthorn Pkwy. If you prefer, a more rustic approach into the PA is just ahead at: 41.41469°N, 81.45861°W. From there, a bridle trail heads S across the pkwy into the woods. The bridle trail continues S along the E side of the Harper Ridge PA and provides easy access to the PA.
After 0.95 mi, BT crosses SOM Center Rd (SR 91), descending E with several fords. Just past third ford at bridle trail junction, BT heads S across Hawthorn Pkwy climbing SW gradually. In 0.37 mi at bridle trail junction, BT turns E, crossing Arbor Lane (0.11 mi) to continue on bridle trail to the left (NE) of the drive into the maintenance area.. In 360’ at bridle trail junction, turn right (SE) and follow trail past small pond on right. Soon, at the next trail intersection, BT turns left (E) and travels 0.5 mi heading in changing directions to a sharp left(N).
Note: Henry Church Rock is directly over the cliff E. Over 100 years ago, Henry Church, Jr. sculpted primitive figures into a boulder on E Chagrin R bank. To get there, go S across bridge, take first intersection down steps and head N. After inspecting Church’s handiwork, continue N to return to trail at the E end of Henry Church Rock PA.
Continue on BT N. After 0.2 mi, trail from Henry Church Rock returns at the Henry Church Rock Picnic Area. BT turns left (W) around P passing N side of Pr.

Pt. 12. Henry Church Rock Parking Area (P, Pr, PT): CW 23.3 ; CCW 42.9

Continue on to exit the Henry Church Rock parking lot. Cross Hawthorn Pkwy and head left (NW) on The Shelterhouse Loop. Upon reaching an open area, cross the lawn and the parking lot to the horse mounting block structure. Follow bridle trail as it winds first right (N), then sharply turns left (SW), and finally W to cross Sulphur Springs Dr. Turn right (E) off the bridle trail, cross a ditch on a small footbridge, and descend to the trail along the stream bank level via a set of box steps.

Pt. 13. Sulphur Springs Parking Area (P, Pr, PT): CW 24.1 ; CCW 42.1
BT leaves parking area NW across footbridge and continues on footpath W to join bridle trail. Turn right (SW) and follow bridle trail as it seems to turn in all directions. At Look About Lodge Loop Trail, leave bridle trail and head right (E) on this single track trail. Cross a small stream and continue 0.1 mi to the Look About Lodge Connector Trail. Turn left (N) on connector, pass Look About Lodge (a Cleveland Metroparks Interpretive Center), and pass Pr along E side of parking area.

Pt. 14. Look About Lodge Parking Area (P, Pr): CW 25.2 ; CCW 41.0

Head right (E) from the NE end of the parking lot. At the intersection of Miles Rd and Chagrin River Rd, turn left (N) to cross Miles Rd to reach the E side of Chagrin River Rd. BT goes N along E side of Chagrin River Rd and soon joins a bridle trail. In 0.15 mi, bridle trail leaves road to cross a variety of habitats including woods, meadows and wetlands created by the meanders of the Chagrin R. In another 0.55 mi reach Willey Creek. Head left (W) on footpath towards Chagrin River Rd. Go around the guardrail, cross N over Willey Creek via the bridge, and turn right (NE) at end of guardrail onto footpath. Turn left (N) on bridle trail and follow it generally NE. At a single track trail, turn right (S) and continue 0.3 mi to where the BT meets and turns right (NE) to rejoin the bridle trail.

Pt. 15. Bridle Trail beneath Chagrin Blvd: CW 26.7 ; CCW 39.5
