Content Editing Specialist

The Content Editing Specialist supports the Buckeye Trail Association’s storytelling and communication efforts by editing written content for the Trailblazer digital quarterly magazine and the Buckeye Trail website blog. This role ensures all materials are clear, engaging, accurate, and consistent with BTA’s mission and voice.

Responsibilities

• Edit and proofread Trailblazer digital quarterly magazine articles for grammar, clarity, tone, and style consistency.
• Review and refine Buckeye Trail website blog submissions for readability, SEO, and formatting.
• Verify facts, names, and locations related to the Buckeye Trail and its communities.
• Ensure content aligns with BTA’s brand, mission, and editorial guidelines.
• Suggest improvements to article flow, structure, or messaging as needed.

Outcome/Impact

The Content Editing Specialist plays a vital role in maintaining the professionalism and credibility of the Buckeye Trail Association’s publications. Their careful editing helps the BTA inspire readers, attract new members, and promote stewardship of Ohio’s premier long-distance trail through accurate and compelling storytelling.

This position is a remote position that is completely digital, no risks. 

Term Limits

This position is an annual renewal position based on interest and performance. May serve continuously with mutual agreement between volunteer and supervisor. We deeply value your time and your willingness to support the Buckeye Trail in a volunteer capacity. We do our best to check in as needed with new volunteers to ensure you have the tools and support you need to make a difference. As a volunteer, you understand that your service is entirely voluntary. At any time and for any reason, either you or the BTA may choose to end your volunteer service. A volunteer position may also be adjusted, in conversation with the relevant BTA staff member, to better suit either the needs of the BTA or the interests of the volunteer. The best way to ensure you're well supported and providing meaningful service is to stay in regular and proactive contact with your BTA volunteer point person, who will be introduced to you during the onboarding process.

• Strong command of English grammar, spelling, and style utilizing the Buckeye Trail Association style guide.
• Commitment of approximately 10-15 hours per month, depending on publication cycles.
• Reliable internet connection and comfort communicating via email and virtual meetings.
• Willingness to collaborate and flexibility

Desired Skills

• Experience with editorial work, journalism, or communications.
• Knowledge of outdoor recreation, conservation, or nonprofit communications.
• Comfort using shared documents, CMS platforms, or collaboration tools.
• Ability to offer constructive feedback and work as part of an editorial team.

• Maintain confidentiality of unpublished materials.
• Participate in periodic editorial team or communications team meetings

• Reports to BTA Staff - Marketing Coordinator.
