Hiking Experience Committee Member

The Hiking Experience Committee Member helps enhance and expand opportunities for people to enjoy the Buckeye Trail. Committee members collaborate to develop hiking programs, recognition initiatives, and events that encourage people to explore the trail, engage with the hiking community, and build lasting connections to the Buckeye Trail Association (BTA).

Duties/Responsibilities

• Attend and actively participate in monthly Hiking Experience Committee meetings
• Contribute ideas and recommendations to improve the trail user experience
• Assist with the development and administration of hiking challenges, recognition programs, and other projects
• Help design and evaluate patches, awards, and other hiker incentive programs
• Support the planning and promotion of guided hikes and hiking-related events
• Gather feedback from trail users and volunteers to identify opportunities for improvement

Outcome/Impact

The Hiking Experience Committee helps create meaningful and memorable experiences for trail users. Through hiking challenges, guided hikes, and recognition programs, committee members encourage trail exploration, foster community, increase participation in BTA activities, and strengthen connections between hikers and the Buckeye Trail.

Risks & Hazards

• Minimal physical risk during committee meetings and planning activities
• Occasional participation in outdoor events may involve exposure to weather, uneven terrain, and other common hiking conditions

Term Length & Exit Clause Reminder

The term for this position ongoing, unless circumstances require otherwise. We deeply value your time and your willingness to support the Buckeye Trail in a volunteer capacity. We do our best to check in as needed with new volunteers to ensure you have the tools and support you need to make a difference. As a volunteer, you understand that your service is entirely voluntary. At any time and for any reason, either you or the BTA may choose to end your volunteer service. A volunteer position may also be adjusted, in conversation with the relevant BTA staff member, to better suit either the needs of the BTA or the interests of the volunteer. The best way to ensure you're well supported and providing meaningful service is to stay in regular and proactive contact with your BTA volunteer point person, who will be introduced to you during the onboarding process.

• Interest in hiking, outdoor recreation, and the Buckeye Trail
• Ability to attend monthly committee meetings
• Willingness to collaborate with other volunteers and contribute ideas

Desired Skills

• Familiarity with the Buckeye Trail and BTA programs
• Experience planning events, hikes, challenges, or volunteer activities
• Experience with program development, marketing, or community engagement
• Passion for creating welcoming and inclusive outdoor experiences
