Join volunteers who build and restore Ohio’s trails

Trail work—the work of building sustainable, durable, appealing trails—combines elements of art and science. Whether you’re new to trail work or a seasoned professional, there are opportunities around Ohio to learn and practice the craft and give back to your community.

Trail work can involve skills you may already have. Depending on the project, skills that might come in handy include:

  • Carpentry, construction, and hand tool use
  • An eye for how water will flow across a surface
  • Engineering, including analysis of the durability of surfaces over time
  • Landscape design and an eye for views
  • Gardening, including sustainable pruning methods for brush growing close to the trail
  • Psychology and patterns of use, including where people will be tempted to walk off-trail
